Traveling with Children
(Continued from page 1)
Toys for Travel Only
Reserve certain games and books just for travel. You can let your child know what they are ahead of time, to build anticipation, or release one every day or 100 miles in the car for the surprise element. Or, when no one is looking, hide little treasures, like candy, small toys, etc., in the hotel room or play area. A good choice for toddlers is a small plush toy and book combination, such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar Book with Plush Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Preteens might enjoy travel versions of board games, from Yahtzee to Battleship, older kids will relish a "trip only" Gameboy or CD.
Make It Special
Institute some "we're-on-vacation" special privileges an extra dessert per day, for example, no shoes in the car for a squirmy toddler or sleeping in an extra hour for older kids.
