Get the Most Out of a Hotel

Some travelers treat their hotels as simply places to sleep in between sightseeing tours, dinners out and similar vacation activities. But for others, the hotel can be a very important part of the destination, a home away from home that offers services and amenities to take the edge off of traveling. By following a few tips of the frequent traveler, you too can make the most of your next hotel experience, and even save money while you're doing it.

Ted Wright is an international hotel consultant who has stayed in rooms all over the world. Here he offers a guide to getting the best possible service and the best possible price the next time you stay in a hotel.

  • The staff. When he first enters the hotel, Wright makes it a point to be friendly without being forward. He gets to know the doorman and the staff and tries to make a good impression. If you are courteous and respectful, it will be repaid to you in kind.

  • Occupancy. Wright suggests asking the receptionist about the hotel's occupancy. Is it full? Are there empty rooms? If the hotel is not fully booked, you may have some room to change your reservations or even upgrade to a better room.

  • Discounts. It's also a good idea to ask about discounts when you're checking in. If you're staying multiple nights, or if you're a frequent guest at the hotel, the receptionist or manager might be able to help you save some money.

  • First names. The key to getting the best out of room service is learning the first names of the order taker on each shift. When you call to place an order, ask the employee a few questions, and establish a connection. Being friendly is the best way to endear yourself to the staff, and might just earn you the royal treatment.
