Canoeing on smooth water is fun for paddlers of all ages.

Canoeing the Potomac

Once vital arteries of travel and trade, our nation's waterways are still very important as popular spots for recreation and relaxation. In lakes, rivers and canals, Americans can be seen in boats of all shapes and sizes, fishing, water skiing, or just soaking up the sunshine. A favorite way to travel on the water is by canoe, and a great destination for both beginner and experienced paddlers is the Potomac River of West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland.

Raised in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Matt Knott began guiding canoe trips on the Potomac when he was 18 years old. Shortly after graduating from a nearby University, Knott decided to quit pursuing a "real world" career and make his living doing what he loves best. He bought River Riders, a company offering various river adventure packages, in 1998 and has since run most of the rivers in the eastern US as well as many others in Canada and Central America.

  • Fun for all ages. Many sections of the Potomac are flat and gentle, and these are popular with canoe paddlers. Knott guides groups that include all ages, from kids up to senior citizens, as canoeing in smooth water is not physically demanding.

  • Comfort in the water. Potential paddlers should not have a fear of the water, however, as even in calm water there is always the chance that the boat will tip, and the riders will have to bring it to shore to dump the water out.

  • Life jackets. According to Knott, it's always a good idea to wear a life jacket, even if law does not require it and even if you're a strong swimmer. The added buoyancy will help you in case the canoe tips, and a jacket could save your life in the event of an unforeseen emergency.

  • Natural beauty. The most popular trip at Knott's company is the half-day trip, which starts in Shepherdstown, WV and ends in Harpers Ferry, WV. The route is remote and mostly unspoiled, offering great views of wooded mountainsides, wildlife, and a few houses here and there. Many of the guests who come out and paddle through the natural splendor enjoy it so much that they come back again and again.
