Gardens of Washington, D.C.There's more to the nation's capital than marble monuments If your mental picture of Washington, D.C. is comprised of the White House, the Capitol and little else, you aren’t alone. Few Americans who have not taken the time to explore the city’s colorful and eclectic neighborhoods and parks realize that Washington is a lush metropolis filled with beautiful flowers, trees and green spaces. A visit to D.C. in spring or summer holds the promise of walking through some of the nation’s most beautiful gardens.
Here are some of D.C.’s many beautiful gardens: - Dumbarton Oaks. Located in Georgetown and run by Harvard University, Dumbarton Oaks is worth a whole afternoon’s visit. With extensive English, French and Italian gardens, the location is quite impressive.
- Hillwood Museum. Another beautiful spot worth visiting is Hillwood Museum and Gardens, which is the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post. The lush grounds feature a rose garden, Japanese garden, greenhouse and more, all located on the same property as a world-class art museum.
- Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. One museum that’s seldom visited but is nonetheless exquisite is Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, which is a series of water lily pools with blooming lilies and golden lotus plants.
