In-Flight Travel Accessories

Spending time on an airplane is often the most frustrating part of traveling, especially for the majority of us who can’t spend the extra money to book first-class. Dealing with cramped spaces, noisy flight cabins, and the habits and personalities of fellow passengers can make for a trying experience. Luckily, travel stores offer a number of products designed to make the most out of a rough situation, and these simple and effective accessories can go a long way towards making your hours in the air more comfortable and enjoyable.

Lynn Staneff has been an avid traveler for more than 25 years, during which time she has made every possible packing error and learned the lessons of these mistakes. As coordinator of media relations for Magellan's, she has the opportunity to try all of the new travel goodies that make packing, and travel, a little easier. Here she offers a guide to some air travel accessories that can make your next flight a more pleasurable one:

  • Neck Pillow. Staneff's favorite in-flight product is the inflatable neck pillow. Used properly, this item can keep your head from bobbing around when you sleep, eliminating that embarrassing moment when you wake up with your head on your neighbor’s shoulder. The key is to keep the pillow slightly under-inflated so you’re not dealing with a rock-hard pillow, and so your head has room to nestle and find a comfortable position.

  • Sleep aids. A good pair of earplugs and a good eyeshade mask are also recommended. New time zones, bright lights and loud passengers can make sleeping on a plane difficult, and being able to reduce sound and light will make things a lot easier.

  • Blankets. In Staneff’s experience, airplanes tend to be a little chilly, and airline-provided blankets can run out on a full flight. She advises bringing along an emergency blanket just in case you need that extra warmth to get comfortable. The smallest ones will fold up into a four-inch square that’s about an eighth of an inch thick so they’ll easily fit into a carry-on bag and will also keep you toasty warm.

  • Wipes. And perhaps most importantly, Staneff recommends having disposable antibacterial wipes on hand whenever you’re on a plane. You can use them to freshen your face, freshen your hands and wipe down surfaces, including the tray table off of which you will be eating.
