Wine lovers aren't getting all the press anymore! Discover home brewing, a satisfying hobby that involves a little bit of cooking, a little bit of chemistry and lots of camaraderie. Brewing clubs around the country share and enjoy the beers they make themselves. People go there to taste and trade recipes for all sorts of microbrews.
- On average, annual brew club dues are about $20.
- Around 9 million six-packs of beer are home-brewed annually.
- Malt extract syrup, hops and yeast are the basic ingredients used by breweries all over the world.
- Fermentation temperature, water quality and boiling time will produce different results with the same recipe.
- It takes two hours to brew a five-gallon batch of beer; which equals around 60 12-ounce bottles.
Getting Started: Home Brewing
- Federal and local drinking laws apply to home brewing and related activities should be enjoyed responsibly.
- Your first home brew should be an ale. They take less time than most to ferment and you can enjoy your results sooner.
- The brewing process takes two hours; the remaining time is used for fermentation, conditioning, bottling, and aging.
