Surfing Facts:
- Shorter boards are faster but less stable. Longer boards are usually recommended for beginners.
- You don't have to be near the ocean to surf. Try the Great Lakes.
- West Coast surfing is best because there are more predictable surf breaks. The East Coast is less reliable.
Getting Started: Your First Surfing Lesson
- To physically prepare for your first surfing lesson, swim some laps. Also consider practicing your balance on a skateboard. (Wear protective gear).
- Our friends at Surf Diva recommend that you bring what you would take for a normal few hours at the beach: Sunscreen, a comfortable swimsuit, a towel, surf trunks, a hair tie, sunglasses, a sweatshirt, hat, drinking water, and a light snack.
- Get to your lesson at least a half-hour early.
