Beach Weston releases her daily tension on her visual journal. Manhattan Beach, CA.

Every Day Counts (107)
Ronnie Krokdal never seems to have enough time in her busy life. And even if she could find the space in her days to devote to exercise, it'd still be difficult to get a handle on all the different fitness programs available to her. That's where personal trainer Dan Isaacson comes in. He provides Krokdal with a basic exercise regimen designed to be done anywhere, especially by people plagued with limited time and hectic travel schedules.

According to the artist and teacher Mary Jane Casey, the process of visual journaling helps ordinary people unleash their inner artists. And it's not just about recording personal hopes and fears. Instead, visual journaling involves committing words to paper in stream-of-consciousness style. Learn about the emotional and psychological benefits of this exercise, which takes journaling to a new level.

Lastly, meet Sandra Hurtado and Denise Earnsham, a couple of friends who learned that adventures can lie close to home. Michael Richmond from Acacia Winery takes the two on a tour of the 150-acre property located in the middle of Napa Valley's Carneros region.

Visual Journaling Facts:

  • Famous journal writers include John Adams, James Boswell, Samuel Pepys and Anais Nin.

  • Try painting from your shoulder, not your wrist. Working from the shoulder loosens you up, both physically and mentally.

  • The left side of the brain controls your right hand, as well as analytical thinking. The right side of the brain controls your left hand, and emotional, intuitive and imaginative responses.

  • Visual journaling can be done almost anywhere. Just making marks on paper with a regular pencil is a good start.
