It Starts on the Inside—Hockey, Food, Knitting (102)
This episode showcases individuals who come together to exercise their souls and celebrate their passions. First, meet a group of businessmen who leave the stress of the workday behind to play in a hockey league at night. Their love for the game and need to compete keep their bodies sharp and their souls fulfilled. Then, chef Lesa Carlson tells why she's a leading proponent of the "raw foodist" movement. Finally, meet women who've taken the age-old art of knitting to a new level, and find out why this craft is the "new yoga."

Team Sports Facts:

  • In addition to hockey, basketball, softball and soccer are three top sports for men and women.

  • Sports leagues are formed for all player levels, with the major requirement being commitment rather than ability.

  • When everything looks bleak, team sports offer something to look forward to at the end of the work day.

  • Hockey can be expensive, with gear and uniforms costing into the hundreds of dollars. Ice time is usually least expensive on weekday nights but in high demand.

  • When commitment isn't possible but exercise and camaraderie are needed, join a no-cost pick-up basketball game in the local park.

Knitting Facts:

  • Knitting was first introduced to Europe in the 5th century A.D.

  • A native Swede, Susanne "Suss" Cousins helped design many of the knitted sweaters worn by the inhabitants of "Whoville" in the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

  • Knitting as a cottage industry in Yorkshire, England, dates to the end of the 16th Century.

  • Yarns can be spun from a variety of materials, from wool and cotton to silk and infinite varieties of synthetics, blends and recycled materials.

  • Because of its insulating properties, even when wet, wool is favored in many cold, damp climates
