Scott Oshry works at his desk. Los Angeles, CA

Oshry Home — A lifelong love of architecture inspired Scott Oshry to build the modern home of his dreams in Bel Air, California. Built with 85 slabs of limestone to create the exterior, this home is 50 percent glass, which provides views of the surrounding hillsides. One of the most unique features is the glass-walled walkway that bisects the space and is tinted to protect the wood floors from UV rays. Even the ultramodern kitchen, with its stainless steel appliances and glass topped kitchen table has walls of glass. Scott also designed his dining room to have the feeling of a restaurant. Another room with a view is Scott's two-story living room that houses his piano. It has 24-foot high ceilings which help with the acoustics. Although this home is a bachelor pad, it still provides Scott with the ultimate space for entertaining friends and family L.A. style.

Fernandes-Trelogan Home — Like a mirage rising out of the Phoenix, Arizona desert, Dennis Fernandes designed a modern metal block home that shimmers with a silver glow and stands alone in its stark design. The home's exterior is made of a galvanized steel — a strong, non-combustible material that can resist earthquakes and hurricanes — and the unique landscaping is filled with rocks and drought-resistant plants. The interior of the house is atypical for Arizona as well; you won't find adobe walls or southwestern décor here — this is modern mesa living. Dennis and Hope Trelogan put an urban spin on their desert home by remodeling it to include open, flowing spaces, and one of the most unique spaces is their bedroom. They love spending so much time with their dog, Tennessee, that they designed their bedroom around him. Their bed and their dog's bed are both sunken into polished, concrete floor, which helps keep the room cool. The well of the master bed is deep enough to fit a normal sized mattress with a wooden frame. Both beds are bordered with stainless steel.

Landscape Design

  • Landscaping requires planning and creativity.
  • Choose a theme and vegetation that compliments the style of your home, and choose trees and plants that are in scale with your home.
  • Plant the most unique foliage near the main entrance.
  • Select plants by their size and shapes so that they can perform a dual function.
  • Combine function with aesthetics to maximize your landscape's effectiveness.
  • Xeriscape is a type of desert landscaping that uses rocks and drought-tolerant plants.

Walker Home — The Walker's bought a vintage Los Angeles house, once home to silent picture star Fatty Arbuckle, and brought it back to its original beauty. Built in 1913, the 6,000 square foot home has 3 buildings: the main house, guesthouse and dance hall. All the wood and wall coverings have been restored creating a traditional family-friendly home. One-of-a-kind murals have been painted on the ceilings to add a sense of whimsy to the interior. The homes dance hall was converted into a home office and all of the home's original bathroom fixtures were restored.
