Two Family Living Homes
Breathing Room : Episode FLBRM-307

Atlanta Bronco Playhouse — Lee Flowers is a professional football player who's been in the league for 8 years and currrently plays for the Denver Broncos. Instead of uprooting his family to move to the city for which team he plays, Lee built a 17,000 square foot home on 2.8 acres of land for his kids to grow up in. With the help of designer Phyllis Frierson, the Flowers created an elegant yet comfortable home complete with a pool, gazebo and outdoor grill for family gatherings. With two small children, the Flowers decided to design a downstairs playroom that gives the kids plenty of room to get messy with their toys. And since Lee is a big kid at heart, he created his own game room complete with a pool table, full bar area and big-screen TV — it's a space that he can use to enjoy time with his friends. The Flowers also built a $160,000 home theater with leather seats and state of the art projection screen.

Tips for Building a playroom:

  • Keep the children close by, but where their noise will not be disruptive.
  • Be sure the door cannot be locked from the inside and small children cannot open windows.
  • Fit artwork area or entire space with washable surfaces and stain-resistant carpet.
  • Built-in shelving and ample closet space make clean up and storage easier.
  • Painting a child's room with a themed mural can help stimulate their creativity — in the Flowers' home, Trompe L'oeil murals create the illusion of a third dimension.

Malibu Surf Home — Alex Kaliakin grew up surfing and wanted his family's home to be near the water. Soon after getting married, he and wife Pearl found a spectacular hillside home. This 2,500 square foot house, located 1,800 feet above sea level, features breathtaking, unobstructed views of the ocean and the city through its 33 tinted windows. Son Kris has taken up his father's love of surfing and the house incorporates many design elements related to this sport, including a surfboard collection housed in a renovated closet. The Kaliakin's breathing room is their second story master suite, which features a glass headboard and spectacular views from every window.
