Jackie Naiditch reads a book in her living room. Los Angeles, Calif.

AIR TIMES:

Let the Light In (308)
Architect Jon Dick designed a 5,500-square-foot sunlit adobe home in Sante Fe, N.M., that features 20-foot ceilings and an 800-square-foot entryway with running water. Owners Sharon Ettinger-Mclaughlin and Don Mclaughlin wanted a living room that called to mind the traditional Native American feature of the "kiva" — a religious building that is used to celebrate their native traditions.

David and Jackie Naiditch built a hillside getaway in Altadena, Calif., designed by architect Dean Nota. This four-level, 2,700 square-foot modern sanctuary is 1,700 feet above sea level, incorporating steel, cinder blocks and black slate in its design. The living room has 16-foot-high walls of glass that gives the Naiditchs an obstructed view of the mountains to the left and the city to the right. In keeping with the open floor plan, there are only two internal doors.
