Donned in canyon-eering gear and considering a plan of attack.

Trade in your high heels and hectic work schedule for cowboy boots and a Wild West adventure. Activities abound at Moab, Utah's Sorrel River Ranch and Spa, from mountain biking and canyon-eering, to off-roading and horseback riding. Here's where those "in-the-know" eat, drink and ride.

  • Sorrel River Ranch: Just a half an hour outside Moab, Utah, the Sorrel River Ranch sits directly on the Colorado River and is surrounded by red rock buttes, spires and mesas towering up to a half-mile high.
  • Mountain biking: Avid mountain bike riders in the area favor Dead Horse Point, where you have 6,000-foot scenic views and unspoiled trails to yourself. It's also where Thelma and Louise drove their convertible off the cliff in the 1990s movie! Find Dead Horse Point 18 Miles off Highway 191, at SR 313.
  • Horseback: Local riders know the best place for a steep ride is Rubik's Cube, a tall butte in the Professor Valley. Movie buffs will recognize the valley from the John Wayne westerns shot here.
  • Secret watering hole: 100 yards from the intersection of Highways 191 and 178. Replenish yourself— and your water bottles —at this spring south of Moab. It's delicious and free!
  • Canyon-eering: Sites are only 20 minutes from Sorrel River Ranch and Moab, and guides are available for all levels. In the summer, early morning and late afternoon are the best times to go canyon-eering.
