Tricks of the Trade > episode FLTOT-110

You're ready to welcome a pet into the household. But where will you find your new family member — the local pet store, an animal rescue group — maybe a breeder? Tricks of the Trade experts will give you the pros and cons of each option.

Once you've brought your new pet home, professional trainer Joe Timko shows you how to train the new addition to the family.

Finding Your Pet

  • If you're buying from a pet store, ask to see the pet's health records and inquire about the store's return policy.
  • Always ask for a breeder's contract before purchasing a pet.
  • Don't forget that both purebreds and mixed breeds are available from shelters and rescue organizations.

Training Your Pet

  • Before you bring a new dog home, puppy-proof your house.
  • To keep your dog from getting over-excited when you come home, remain clam and speak to her quietly.
  • If you leave your dog outside while you're away from home, make sure he relieves himself before you let him back in the house.
  • It's best to begin dog training when your pup is six months old.
  • Allow 15-20 minutes a day for home training.
  • If you hire a private trainer, set aside enough time to learn along with your dog.
