- The dimensions of an effective lap pool are 8–10 feet across, at least 60 feet long and 3.5 feet deep.
- South-facing pools receive the most sun, saving on artificial heating.
- Symmetrical shapes suggest a formal setting.
- Pools with organic, curved lines are informal but they take up more space than symmetrical pools.
- Coping creates a transition between the pool and its surroundings.
- Paving defines the space beyond the pool.
- Grey plaster will make the pool's water appear deep blue, while tan plaster gives water a turquoise look.
- Light-colored and porous materials absorb less heat and are cooler to walk on.
- An infinity edge is designed within the coping just below the water surface allowing it to lap over and drain away.
- Complete your pool with potted plants, a lawn's edge or even a sculpture garden.
- On timber decks, use decay-resistant woods such as cedar and cypress.
