Lighting (110)There's more to lighting than being able to see your way in the dark. Good lighting should be both practical and decorative. Sheila Bridges teams up with designer Eric Cohler to show you how to light in a way that will give an interior space depth and personality. And
Elle Decor's Editor-in-Chief, Margaret Russell, demonstrates the appeal of chandeliers.
Artfully Lit
- Aim track light fixtures 30 degrees from vertical to prevent direct glare.
- If your ceiling features interesting mouldings, use uplights to highlight them.

Light Right
- Place lamps at different heights to break up the horizontal lines created by furnishings.
- Downlights are effective in a kitchen because they spread light evenly throughout the room.
- Wall-mounted lamps are a great alternative to the usual bedside lamps because they free up nightstand space.
- Take advantage of natural light. Western and southern exposures receive warmer light.
- Add to natural light with incandescent lights, which radiate warm yellow light.
- Task lighting is used for daily activities like cooking or reading. Halogen is a good source.
- Accent lighting such as uplights and picture lights add drama to a room.
- Decorative lights such as chandeliers create a focal point in a room.
- Using a dimmer conserves energy and prolongs the life of a bulb.
- Candlelight and firelight cast a warm flattering light. The movement of the flames has a calming effect.

Chandeliers
- Chandeliers are decorative lights. They work best teamed with other sources of light, not as a sole source of light.
- Chandeliers are designed for low-watt bulbs.
- Frosted chandelier bulbs diffuse light more evenly.
- The ideal height for a chandelier is 35-40 inches above a table top.
- Prices for Venetian glass chandeliers start at over $1,000.
- In a dining room, a chandelier works best when it's six inches narrower on each side than the table.
