Farmer's Market

Learn why city slickers Maggie Levy and Susan Bernatz started frequenting neighborhood farmers' markets to find their produce. Follow the two on their weekly pilgrimage to their local market—a true oasis for urban foragers.

Farmers' Market Facts:

  • A certified Farmers Market is one in which farmers sell only what they have grown themselves.

  • Farmers can offer their produce at reduced prices because the markets cut out dealers, brokers and retail chains, all of which have to mark up the cost.

  • For the best selection of produce, plan to arrive early. Flowers especially are sold off quickly.

  • Part of the reason farmers' market products taste better is that they have never been refrigerated. Refrigerating produce can break down the enzymes that create the flavor.
