The wine
Merlot 1999 Smothers/ Remick Ridge Vineyards, $32
Why it's good
Aged 22 months in French oak and bottled in April, 1999, the merlot has supple cherry flavors and is part of the output from Winemaster Richard Arrowood, who makes about 500 cases of Remick Ridge wine each year exclusively from grapes grown at the vineyard. Like all Remick wines, it's 100% varietal, unfiltered and unfined.
More acclaim
The winery's 1992 Merlot was rated a 91 by Anthony Dias Blue, noted wine critic of the San Jose Mercury News and Bon Appetit magazine. The winery itself has appeared on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and an episode of Seinfeld.
