Summer Beer From Patriotic Spirits: 8 All-American Cocktails
When a hot three-day weekend holiday inspires a block party, this tall, cooling mix with All-American ingredients will offset the rising temperatures, says A.J. Rathbun, a food writer and author of the upcoming Good Spirits: Recipes, Revelations, Refreshments, and Romance, Shaken and Served with a Twist (Harvard Common Press).
"I originally had it at the Rock-a-Belly Bar and Deli in Manhattan, Ks., and Kansas in summer is pretty amazingly hot."
It's easy to make, too, says Rathbun. "That means you can spend more time 'ooh-ing' and 'ahh-ing' over all those rockets and their red glares."
Ingredients:
ice cubes
1 bottle beer (go with a nice American brew in this one, such as Miller High Life)
9 oz. fresh lemonade
1-1/2 oz. vodka
lemon slice for garnish
Instructions:
1. Add a good-sized handful of ice to a 24-ounce "big girl" beer glass. Add 8 ounces of the lemonade to the glass.
2. Slowly, carefully, add the bottle of beer to the glass (go too fast and its a mess).
3. Add the vodka, then top it off with the last ounce of lemonade.
4. Stir once, with a mighty long spoon. Squeeze the lemon slice over the top and drop it in.
