The New Year is here and for many of us that means renewed promises to get healthy. In fact, research shows that healthy lifestyle changes — whether they are diet-related, quitting smoking or exercising more — top the list of New Year’s resolutions, year after year. So if part of your plan is to eat healthier this year, here are the top choices for your grocery cart:

  • Tofu is made from soy and, like all beans it’s a great source of plant-based protein. But don't let tofu sit around as it goes bad quickly.

  • Broccoli is also a must. It packs Vitamin C, vitamin A, and lots of dietary fiber. You’ll find the freshest from October to May.

  • While you’re going green, go for spinach. It’s high in iron. Popeye wouldn’t steer us wrong! Look for crisp, dark green leaves.

  • Include tomatoes on your shopping list and look for the reddest you can find. It’s a sign they have more lycopene, which has been shown to prevent cancer. Redder often tastes better too.

  • Blueberries pack a wallop of anti-oxidants and vitamin C — with hardly any calories. Fresh or frozen, they're still one of the healthiest fruits.

  • Nuts like almonds supply us with protein and the healthy fats. And roast them at home. The commercially roasted nuts are often soaked in saturated fats.

  • No super food list would be complete without salmon. The omega 3 fatty acids in this fish can help prevent heart disease. Studies show wild salmon is healthier than farmed.

  • Some compounds found in red wine can also help prevent heart disease. The French have a low rate of heart disease and a high rate of consuming this stuff. Though we suggest moderation.

  • For teetotalers, try green tea. It's got an anti-oxidant that can help protect against heart disease AND cancer.

Here’s to your health in 2008!
