When dogs get hot, they need to drink plenty of water.

Keeping Pets Safe in Summer

With the onset of summer weather, it's very common for pets to get overheated and dehydrated when playing outdoors. To keep your animal friends safe and happy during the "dog days" of summer, make sure you understand the best ways to keep them cool and hydrated.

Veterinarian Dr. Dana Bleifer has studied veterinary medicine all over the world, is a member of several professional vets' associations, and is co-owner of Rose City Veterinary Hospital and Warner Center Pet Clinic in Woodland Hills, CA. Here she explains how to care for pets in the hot months:

  • Keep an eye on short nose breeds.
According to Bleifer, dog breeds with shorter noses, like bulldogs, French bulldogs and pugs, are more sensitive to the heat and more likely to get dehydrated in summer.
  • Keep water on hand for dogs.
It's important to have a constant supply of fresh water whenever your dog is going to be outside in the sun or using up a lot of energy. Dogs do not sweat, and must pant to lower their body temperature. Panting also lowers the amount of water in the dog's body, so dehydration is essential.
  • Buy water supplies.
There are a number of great products that help you keep your dog hydrated. Collapsible bowls fold up to fit almost anywhere, and special dog-owner backpacks can store food and water. When Bleifer travels with one of her dogs, she takes a spray bottle that offers quick, refreshing drinks.
  • Cats are less likely to have problems.
Cats, who seldom engage in the sorts of tiring outdoor activities that dogs love, are a lot less likely to get dehydrated. Still, a steady source of water will keep your kitty happy when it needs to drink.
