10 Great Wines Under $10 Yes, there's quality vino to be had for a price so low it's embarrassing
By Karin Beuerlein
Can a good wine be had for $10? Absolutely. If you usually skip the bargain displays at your wine seller and head for the more expensive stashes in the back, youre missing out on worthwhile wines at sensational prices.
When scouting for great values, dont look to classic wine regions like Burgundy or Bordeaux, says Chris Coad, a New York-based wine writer and self-described geek behind CompleatWineGeek.com. Varieties from Chile, Spain and Australia are often good bets for inexpensive but satisfying wines.
"Anything thats going to be good and cheap is going to be a little offbeat, maybe just a little unusual," he says. "You want to try and catch [brands] on the upward swing." Once a cheap wine gets a good reputation, it tends to stop being cheap. "Rule no. 1 for avoiding the worst of the cheap is never buy a wine that has a commercial," Coad says.
Here's the first of our $10-and-under favorites:
Red Flyer 2003 California Red Table Wine, $ 9, California.
The label depicts a flying saucer zipping through a bleak postmodern landscape, but this award-winning combo of Syrah, Mouvedre, Grenache, Carignan, and "Clone X" contains very pleasant hints of toasty oak.
Prices reflect a standard 750ml bottle and may vary from store to store, and state to state.
