Choosing Binoculars

A quality pair of binoculars can improve countless activities, from bird watching and hiking to stargazing and live sporting events, by letting you see your subject in far greater detail. But all binoculars are not created equal, and a few expert shopping tips can help you choose the pair that is perfect for your uses.

Dan Thralow is the 38-year old owner of Zhumell Binoculars and Thralow Inc., an umbrella website that includes Peepers.com and Binoculars.com. Here he offers tips for selecting quality binoculars that meet your specific needs:

  • Magnification x light gathering.
Binoculars are typically described with two numbers, like 8x42. The first number represents the magnification or power, while the second is a measure of the light gathering ability.

  • Match choice to usage.
Usually, smaller numbers are found on smaller pairs of binoculars, and vice versa. You'll want to balance magnification and light gathering against portability and ease of use, depending on your favored activity. If you're into birding, for example, Thralow suggests a compromise between weight and power, like a 10x42.

  • Longer eye relief for eyeglasses.
If you wear eyeglasses, choose a pair of binoculars with a longer eye relief measurement. This will ensure that the extra distance that your pair of glasses adds between your eye and the eyepiece doesn't lessen your viewing experience.

  • The dollar bill test.
To compare the precision of different models, focus each pair you are trying on the same item, such as a poster, a sign or a dollar bill that you tape to the wall.

  • Take your time.
The binoculars you select could last you the rest of your life, so take your time and enjoy the process of comparison-shopping. When you're out enjoying your favorite activities, you'll be glad you chose wisely!
