Enjoying Eastport

On our way down the Maine coast from New Brunswick, we saw on the map what appeared to be a most intriguing town ? Eastport, Maine.

By
The map indicated that Eastport was almost at the easternmost point in the U.S. and we couldn't resist the idea of making it all the way East. On top of that, the map showed the "Old Sow Whirlpool: Largest Whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere" right off the coast of Eastport.

We pulled off the main road to the small access highway to Eastport and pulled in for what we expected to be a one-night stay. The next morning, we decided to take a ride into Eastport proper. We're always looking for a good Internet connection, and we figured that we could find one at the local library. What happened next is the traveler's dream. We became so enchanted by Eastport that our one-night stay turned into a week before we could tear ourselves away.

Imagine a town that doesn't know it's a great place to visit. Imagine meeting people who aren't jaded by tourism, people who come up to you and shake your hand to say "Welcome to Eastport," when you step out of your motor home. Combine that with incredible scenery, a turn-of-the-century town center, and a rich maritime heritage and you've got a pretty good idea of what kept us there for so long.

Eastport is a about two hours away from the nearest highway, which is yet another couple hours' drive from the nearest metropolitan area. This isolation, along with the fact that there are many beautiful coastal towns much closer to Portland, Boston and New York, conspire to keep Eastport out of the tourism limelight. But if you're willing to go the extra distance, you'll be rewarded with lower prices, friendly people, and most of all, a sense of reality — a sense that the town wasn't built for the enjoyment of tourists but that it will continue to be just as charming in the dead of winter, long after the last city-bound SUV has packed up and left.

But be careful — Eastport, just like the nearby whirlpool, draws you in and doesn't let go.
