Essential AdviceVisiting the Largest Whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere was a highlight of our visit to Eastport, Maine. How to Get There
- From U.S. Highway 1 in Maine, take the 190 East to its end at Eastport.
Let the Sun Shine
- Eastport is the first city in the U.S. to be bathed by the sunrise. It's well worth the experience to get up early and check it out.
When West Meets East
- The West Quoddy Lighthouse, off the Bay of Fundy in nearby Lubec, Maine, was built in 1858 and is still in operation. Lubec is the easternmost point of land in the continental U.S.
- There is an East Quoddy Lighthouse off of Campobello Island, but it is offshore and across the border in New Brunswick, Canada.
What To Do with Your Week in Eastport
- There are no movie theaters or fast food places in Eastport, but there are several excellent privately-owned restaurants and a lobster pound.
- During the summer months, Eastport offers a ferry to Deer Island, New Brunswick, Canada. The ferry is a lovely way to see the town from the water.
- Fishing is big in Eastport, and you can cast your line right off the breakwater in the harbor, or charter a boat for the morning.
- Eastport has a vibrant salmon aquaculture industry and hosts the Salmon Festival in September every year.
The Old Sow and Her Piglets
- The Old Sow whirlpool claims its title as the "Largest Whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere" and is actually the second largest whirlpool in the world.
- The small whirlpools most often visible in the Old Sow area are called "piglets" by the locals.
- The Old Sow is generally at her largest and strongest in the spring and when the tides are at their highest levels, during the full and new moons.
What to Eat in Eastport
- We fell in love with the salsa-steamer clams at Sardina Loca, which holds claim as the Easternmost Mexican restaurant in the U.S.
- If you like your clam chowder thick and creamy, visit the Eastport Chowder House. It's on the same dock as the ferry to Deer Island, New Brunswick, so check out the island while you're there. You can get whole lobster at the Chowder House, and there's also a lobster pound where you can get them live or steamed, hard or soft shell.
