Essential AdviceGet the most out of your visit to Canyon de Chelly What's in Name?- "de Chelly" (pronounced "de Shay") is a Spanish corruption of the Navajo word, "Tseyi," which means "in the rock."
- The town of Chinle comes from "Ch'inli,'" referring to the mouth of Canyon de Chelly where the waters flows out.
- The Navajo call themselves "Dine," which means, simply, "The People."
Know Your Etiquette - Always ask permission before photographing the Navajo, their homes or their animals. If you photograph a Navajo, a small gratuity is usually expected.
- The Navajo are self-governing, so some laws differ from those of the state of Arizona. For example, possession of alcoholic beverages is illegal in the Navajo nation.
Critical Information - While guided tours into the canyon require a fee, entrance to the park and camping in its one campground are free. Donations can be made to the park in the visitor center.
- The North and South Rims of the Canyon are open to the public as well as one hiking trail to White House ruin. For other trips into the canyon, a permit and authorized guide is required.
- A three-hour private jeep tour is about $125 for up to three people, not including gratuity for the guide. There are several outfitters who also offer horseback riding, hiking, or bring-your-own-vehicle tours.
- Summer is the busiest season at Canyon de Chelly, although not nearly as busy as the Grand Canyon. To avoid the crowds, try visiting the Canyon in the fall.
- Flash floods are common, and the Canyon is often closed during times of heavy rain, so check the weather before hiring a guide.
- Stop at the visitor center and pick up the free "Canyon Overlook" guide. It lists all of the various camping and guide services, park rules, average temperatures, and a little about the history of the canyon.
