A sense of humor is very important in the ghost business.

The Haunts of Savannah

  • Savannah has been named one of the top five haunted cities in the US. The other four are New Orleans, St. Augustine, Charleston, and Salem.

  • There are over 30 Ghost tour operators in Savannah, so shop around to find the tour that fits your interests.

  • Ghost Ride's Hearse Tour also takes you through the more prominent landmarks of the city, so you get all the good ghost stories as well as a good lay of the land for your later exploring.

  • Ghost Ride's tours are $14 for adults, $10 for children. Ghosts ride free.

  • Ghost Ride's hearses were in service for over 15 years and carried literally thousands of coffins before being bought and converted into tour coaches by the tour company.

  • Most ghost tours are given at dusk or after dark--a wonderful way to experience the spookier side of Savannah.

Tour du Jour

  • Most cities with a rich history will offer a variety of tours to fit almost any taste. Ask at the visitor's center or chamber of commerce if you have a particular interest--there may be a perfect tour for you.

  • While we were in Savannah, we picked up brochures for a wide variety of tours covering everything from African American Heritage to antiques to the Civil War to Savannah gardens.

  • If you can't find a general tour that fits your particular interests, try calling one of the more general-interest tour operators or ask the chamber of commerce. Some tour operators will design a private custom tour to meet your needs. Expect to pay more for this type of tour.

The Comfortable Tourist

  • Consider bringing along some bottled water and sunscreen, especially if you'll be taking a walking tour during the day. Many tours use open-air buses and the bottled water is a much needed relief during the summer. Be sure to ask if water is allowed on the bus.

  • For walking tours, wear comfortable shoes and bring along an umbrella or rain gear. In cities like Savannah, the weather can change quickly.

  • A backpack is easier to carry when walking long distances than a handbag or purse. The extra room in a backpack can carry your bottled water and rain gear, too.

  • Take pictures sparingly on your tour, so you can really experience the tour. If there's an image you want, you can always make a note of the spot and come back later to get your photo.
