Château du Sureau, Yosemite, Calif.

Yosemite; Château du Sureau (105)
The breathtaking Château du Sureau, located just outside Yosemite National Park in Oakhurst, Calif., is the perfect site for Jeff and Darcy Lee's first vacation since the birth of their child. Join them as the Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides lead them on a rock-climbing adventure off the beaten path at Little Shuteye Pass. Then, witness their encounter with turn-of-the-century European luxury and first-class pampering at the Château–including a memorable three-hour, six-course meal at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant.

Yosemite Facts:

  • The Château du Sureau was built in 1991 by Erna Klubin-Clanin. The inn was built as a follow-up to Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant, which was named for the elderberry bushes that cover the rolling property.

  • Château du Sureau has earned the Mobil Five-Star and the AAA Five-Diamond ratings, as well as inclusion in the prestigious Relais & Châteaux list of hotels and restaurants.

  • There are only 10 guestrooms at the Château, most of which have wood-burning fireplaces.

  • In addition to the Château and restaurant, a private villa is available. Built in 1999, the Villa Sureau is a 2,000-square-foot guesthouse designed to resemble a Paris manor house.

  • The Château offers a two-week cooking course for $850.

  • The Château can arrange many activities ranging from kayaking to rock climbing in Yosemite National Park.

  • The Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides charge about $350-400 for a day of rock climbing.

  • California has the three top-rated spots for rock climbing in the United States–Yosemite being one of the three.

  • The best times of year for rock climbing in Yosemite are March through May and mid-September through mid-November. The worst months, because of overcrowding, are July through mid-September.
