#9: Flatware Korean-made 18/10 flatware is a good, affordable choice, made of 18 percent chromium and 10 percent nickel. A good flatware set should last 2030 years. A good 42-piece set for eight will cost from $75 to more than $600.
#8: Sheets Jersey sheets are made from soft knit cotton that feels like a comfortableT-shirt. Sateen sheets are usually cotton and are made soft and lustrous by smoothing the yarn. A 200 threat-count sheet can have a softer feel than a 400 thread-count sheet that uses a lower grade of cotton. A less expensive alternative to Egyptian cotton is American pima cotton. Hold the sheet up against a light if you can see through it, it's poor quality.
#7: Towels When choosing towels, weight is more reliable indicator of quality than softness. Towels with the most loops per square inch have the greatest drying power. Wash and dry new towels before you use term to remove finishes and excess dyes.
#6: Glassware Basic glassware sets range in price from $10-$37. Wash glasses with liquid soap rather than detergent to reduce residue. To remove spots or film, wipe a damp glass with a paper coffee filter.
#4: Blankets and Comforters Higher loft down has more space between the feathers and is warmer. Manufacturers aren't required to list the type of down on the label, so make sure to ask. Down blankets are thinner than comforters and are ideal for warmer climates. Modal is a form of rayon, a natural fiber made of wood.
#3: Window Treatments A 27 percent solar shade will let in more light than a 3 percent solar shade. They are also easier to see through at night. Mini blinds should be dusted weekly or the dust will turn to tough grime. An outside mount is easier for a do-it-yourselfer to install.
