If you plan to buy linens in Europe, bring your measurements in centimeters!

Ombretta: One of my favorite things to look for at Tuscan antique markets are beautiful hand embroidered linens, tablecloths, and curtains. The craftsmanship is really amazing.

Douglas: We have antique linens on our bed here in Italy. I love the way they feel against your skin. One of my favorites is even embroidered with the words Buon Riposo, which is Italian for "Sleep Well!"

Douglas: Once you've seen what goes into making such intricate linens you have much more respect and a greater appreciation for all those beautiful linens found at Italian antique markets.

Ombretta: You can imagine how expensive it would be to make such products, but there are a few linen companies who mix a commercial approach with fine handmade details. One such company is DEA, which is based in Quarrata, a town near Florence.

Douglas: Beautiful antique linens are pretty easy to find, easy to travel with, and are the perfect complement to any bed.

Ombretta: And you should see what amazing dreams you have at night.

Douglas: You spend a third of your life sleeping, so why not do it on beautiful antique linens?

Ombretta: Only a third? I could sleep more than that!

Three Things to Know about Handmade Linens

  1. Know the differences in sizes between Italy and U.S. linens. If planning to buy linens when in Europe, measure your table or bed before traveling, and be sure to know the dimensions in centimeters.
  2. Antique linens may appear yellowish in the market, but will return to white after bleaching.
  3. Many traditional ricamo (hand-sewing) techniques can now be duplicated by sewing machines, so be careful when you buy antique linens to know if they're really handmade.
