- The Carrera Panamericana was a six-day border-to-border race inaugurated by the Mexican government to celebrate the completion of the Panamerican Highway. The race covered 2,096 miles from the towns of Juarez to El Ocotal.
- The winner of the first Carrera Panamericana was Hershel McGriff of Portland, Ore., in a 1950 Oldsmobile 88.
- Ferrari won the race twice; in 1951 with a 212 Export, and again in 1954 with a Ferrari 375 in the large sports car category.
- Phil Hill took second place in 1953 in a Ferrari 375MM Vignale Spyder.
- The Mexican government cancelled the event after the 1954 race, citing high numbers of spectator and driver injuries and fatalities.
