The earlier model GTO sneaked onto the market despite corporate rules against a large powerful engine in a small car. It immediately captured the imagination of a generation and created a profitable new category of automobile--the Muscle Car.
Due to the oil embargo in the 70s, the auto industry ban against racing sponsorship and a change in corporate thinking, the GTO ceased production in 1974. Now it's back, and the automotive legend's last chapter has yet to be written.
