Hole #18

Course Description
The par-72, 6737-yard course has become as big a TV star as any of the celebrities seen there every winter at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. It includes mature stands of trees, roller coaster greens and bunkers that could easily hide an SUV.

Details
A 548-yard, par-5 hole with the Pacific Ocean crashing against its flanks. The angle from the tee into the fairway is severe. There's a big tree in the middle of the fairway, and to the right is rough, bunkers, and even houses. The green is small and firm and breaks toward the ocean.

Why is it rated so highly?
All of the greats have played Pebble Beach, and reaching par-5 on its final hole requires challenging the ocean one-on-one.

How do you play it?
Long players can try to reach the green in two, but the safe play is a lay-up down the right side of the fairway, leaving a wedge to the green. But not too far right, as a large tree can easily get in the way and two bunkers guard the right side of the putting surface.

Course Trivia
In 1998, the left side of the hole was rebuilt to protect the coastline from erosion, and keep the hole safe for future generations, which moved the peninsula tee to the right and further into the water.
