Location
Farmingdale, New York
Hole #5
Course Description
The layout and most of the green surfaces of Albert Warren Tillinghast's 1934 original design have remained unchanged despite the recent USGA renovation that increased the course by 350 yards, offering a play of 7,214 yards and a par-71.
Details
This hole is a 451-yard, par-4 with a massive bunker running the length of the fairway on the right side, and finishing with an almost 90 degree angled green to the left.
Why is it rated so highly?
It's a challenging hole and green fees are reasonable: $40 for New York residents and $80 for out-of-state visitors.
How do you play it?
The key shot is the drive, with the ideal shot finishing down the right side to carry the bunker. The challenge continues and requires careful navigation of the bunker-surrounded, small, and elevated green.
Course Trivia
Champion Tiger Woods was the only player in the 2002 U.S. Open to finish under par on the longest course in U.S. Open history.
