PGA West, Stadium, Calif. Hole 16 Specials : Episode FLAMD-SP01
Location
Palm Springs, California
Hole #16
Course Description
This 7,261-yard, par-72 course was designed by Pete Dye and features his signature waste bunkers lining many of the holes. Unlike traditional bunkers, the club can be grounded without penalty. Only perfect contact will clear the bunker.
Details
This par-5 offers 566 yards of bumpy fairway bordered on the left by one of the course's deepest waste areas that has been aptly named "The San Andreas Fault."
Why is it rated so highly?
Dye was directed by developers Ernie Vossler and Joe Walser to build the hardest golf course in the world. The prime example is manifest in this hole and its massive green-side bunker that sits 20 feet below the level of the green.
How do you play it?
Literally, "thinking right" is the key. Aim your tee and second shot down the right side and use a short iron to the green. Again, think right on your green approach, unless you wish to test your skills in the famed San Andreas Bunker.
Course Trivia
Even Tip O'Neill, the late Speaker of the House, was at a loss for words when he played the Stadium course during the 1987 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Exasperated by San Andreas' unyielding design, and after many attempts to blast out, the former Speaker finally conceded and simply threw the ball out!
