Spyglass Hill, Calif. Hole 4 Specials : Episode FLAMD-SP01
Location
Pebble Beach, California
Hole # 4
Course Description
Opened in 1966 and designed by Robert Trent Jones, the dean of American architects, Spyglass Hill is reputedly the toughest course in Northern California. It offers a 6,862- yard, par-72.
Details
From a slightly elevated tee, this par-4 offers 370 yards of tree, shrub, ice plant- and sandy soil-lined fairway. It curves from right to left and ends in a dune-surrounded green sharply angled to the left.
Why is it rated so highly?
Spyglass Hill is ranked as one of the toughest courses on the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am rotation, where nature and course design conspire to challenge even the most skilled player. Number 4 is especially tough because club selection is dictated by such conditions as wind, fog, ocean spray and cold.
How do you play it?
Avoid the treacherous ice plant in the easy but long, right-side approach. If short bold play is your preference, keep to the left side, hugging the fairway to a short shot to carry the dunes, and scrub to the two-leveled sloping green.
Course Trivia
At the 1967 Crosby National Celebrity Golf Tournament, during Spyglass's first year of rotation, Bing Crosby lost a bet figuring that Jack Nicklaus would not break par on his first try at the course. Crosby lost when Jack shot a one-under-par 71.
