Harbour Town Golf Links, S.C. Hole 18 Specials : Episode FLAMD-SP01
Location
South Carolina
Hole #18
Course Description
Built on the resort island of Hilton Head, S.C., Harbour Town was designed in 1969 by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus. The par-72 course offers 6,973 yards.
Details
With Hilton Head's trademark lighthouse serving as a beacon, this par-4 hole offers 452 yards of fairly wide fairway to a small green.
Why is it rated so highly?
Like Scottish courses of old, Harbour Town's layout requires perfectly positioned shots, a play focusing more on strategy than strength. Number 18 has been the stage of many an exciting finish because the play requires carriage of Calibogue Sound to a very small green.
How do you play it?
The key to safe play is to stay the right, taking care to avoid the trees and condominiums. Keep to the right on the approach so you stay over dry land on your way to the green.
Course Trivia
One of the most exciting PGA Tour finishes at Harbour Town occurred earlier this year when Davis Love's approach to the 18th during a sudden-death playoff hit the flagstick for a birdie, clinching Love's fifth victory there.
