Pasatiempo course sits on rolling land a few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.

Location
Santa Cruz, California
Hole #16

Course Description
The 6,439-yard, par-70 Pasatiempo course sits on rolling land a few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, which creates confounding slopes. Tall trees create magnificent frames for the fairways.

Details
The tee shot on this 395-yard, par-4 is blind, the target a flag in the middle of the fairway. Just in front of the green, the right side drops off steeply into a bunker, then continues to tumble down into a stream to No-Man's Land.

Why is it rated so highly?
With several wrenching choices, this hole is a prime example of the way designer Alister Mackenzie forces golfers to think.

How do you play it?
The best tee shot actually is a slight draw--the left side of the fairway gives the clearest shot into the green. Once over the hill, if you'll stop staring at the drop to the right, you'll notice a landing area to the left, just short of the green. But the ground there isn't flat, and another large bunker demands a crisp, decisive shot.

Course Trivia
Pasatiempo's designer and golf legend, Bobby Jones, collaborated to create the best-known and most admired golf course in the world, Augusta National, home of The Masters.

Green Fees
$135 weekday, $150 weekend, $20 player cart

Distance Markers
150-yard markers, white posts on either side of the fairway; Kirby markers every 25 yards on the center of the fairway (usually starting at 75 yards from the green); three sets of yardages on sprinkler heads on the front, middle, and back edge of the green.

Course Type
Walk or Ride/Caddies (yes--but not required)
