Hole #5

Course Description
The par-73, 7,263-yard Plantation Course winds through pineapple fields and jungle-like vegetation, over rolling green hills and across deep gorges in the volcanic soil. It is almost always buffeted by strong winds.

Details
Golf great Ben Crenshaw and his design partner, Bill Coore, created a unique cape hole, which requires a bold drive and a heroic carry to hit a green sticking out from the fairway.

Why is it rated so highly?
Most cape holes are par-4s; this one is par-5 at 532 yards. The extra distance and extra stroke make it all the more tempting--and it's on the course that's hosted the Mercedes Championship, the first event on the PGA Tour, since 1999.

How do you play it?
The hole slopes from left to right all the way from the tee to the green. Be bold and try to hit a long drive as far down the right side of the wide fairway as possible, being careful to avoid the gorge that runs the length of the hole.

Course Trivia
In 2000, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els turned the Mercedes Championship into a head-to-head duel, throwing birdies and eagles at each other until Tiger prevailed on the second playoff hole.
