Doral Golf Club, Blue, Fla. Hole 18 Specials : Episode FLAMD-SP02
Location
Miami, Florida
Hole #18
Course Description
At 7,125 yards from the tournament tees, the 72-par Doral Blue Course has an abundance of formidable bunkers that require length and finesse. In the past few years, added yardage and sand have made the course tougher.
Details
The course was built to host the annual PGA event, and the par-4, 443-yard 18th hole ends the tournament with a bang: a lake on the left, next to no room on the right due to ficus trees, and bunkers down the right side.
Why is it rated so highly?
Even the pros sweat this front tooth of the "Blue Monster," which has determined the outcome of several PGA events--but amateurs are free to attempt to tame the beast.
How do you play it?
Place the tee shot between the lake on the left and the trees and bunkers right. Just like the fairway, the green is between lake and bunkers. To get back there, balls have to be hit over the water and stop perilously close to the edge.
Course Trivia
In 1991, Paul Azinger stood along the edge of 18, tried to take his stance, kicked away some rocks, and was disqualified when someone watching the tournament at home on television called in to point out the infraction.
