Secret #8: Pushing Past the Plateau
Specials : Episode FLSHL-SP01

No matter how much you exercise and eat right, at some point you will get stuck in a rut. Plateaus are a natural function of the body as it gets used to a new regimen. So the good news is your efforts are paying off, the bad news is you have to work harder — shake things up, switch things around. The process is called "periodization" or cross training. Vary the length, activity and intensity of your workouts. Also, keep a food diary to track what you're eating and keep yourself honest!

Guest Expert: Greg Isaacs, Fitness Trainer-Owner, Greg Isaacs 360

  • To break through an exercise plateau, add interval training three times a week, endurance training three times a week and flexibility training one time a week
  • Anaerobic is high-intensity effort. Aerobic is a recovery period.
  • Do four to six anaerobic intervals of 30-60 seconds each within a 45 minute workout.
  • Strength training should be incorporated on interval days. Do three to five sets.
