Americans spend endless Sundays and summer days fixing up their lawns, decks and patios. But in many parts of the country, the warm weather needed to make use of these great spaces stays around for a blessedly short time. Even in hotter climates, the cool winds of evening can be enough to cut outdoor entertaining short. Luckily, there are a number of new products that can help warm up the patio, and in many cases, provide a beautiful centerpiece to gather around on cool days and nights.

West Los Angeles native Howard Steinberg began hanging out at his dad’s retail business at age 13, watching vacuum cleaners and sewing machines being sold and repaired. After graduating from UCLA in 1977, Steinberg began a career in electronics sales, but found it less satisfying than his father’s business, which he soon bought. Armand’s is now a successful retail fireplace, BBQ and patio heater sales and service business, and Steinberg is a very happy and busy business owner, husband and father. Here he offers tips for people in the market for a patio heater:

  • Natural Gas. If you’re doing a remodel or a new construction you can use natural gas heater. You simply run the gas pipes through your walls to the devices, and they can be mounted on the wall or mounted on the ceiling.

  • Propane. If you’re adding a patio heater to an existing patio, you should consider a propane patio heater. One of the chief advantages to propane is that you can move the unit to whatever spot you want to heat, giving you more flexibility.

  • Outdoor fireplaces. Besides patio heaters you can buy outdoor fireplaces, which can be custom designed and built in to your patio décor.

  • Chimineas. A Chiminea, which means fireplace in Spanish, is a portable outdoor wood-burning fireplace, typically made of clay or metal. Offered in a wide range of designs and sizes, they are unique, beautiful and perfect for roasting marshmallows or warming your toes. It’s always nice to smell wood burning and to hear snap, crackles and pops.

  • All year. With the wide variety of outdoor heaters and fireplaces on the market, it’s easy to enjoy your outdoor spaces all year round. So if the chilly air is keeping you indoors, go out and shop for an outdoor heater today!
