VIDEO TIP: Buying a New Bed Set

Have you been having difficulty sleeping lately? Do you toss and turn, wake up in the middle of the night, or have an ache in your back? Well, according to at least one mattress expert, the problem might be less about your body and more about what your body is lying on. Abnormalities in your sleep routine could be signs that you need to buy a new mattress and box spring. But what's the best way to shop for a new bed set?

Formerly a Sales Representative for the Simmons Company, the world's largest mattress manufacturer, Pawn Kongkosonkichkan is currently a Bedding Trainer with Rich's-Macy's/Lazarus/Goldsmiths in Atlanta. Here he offers mattress and box spring shopping tips:

  • Dress for comfort.
When you shop for a mattress, wear comfortable clothing. If you're uncomfortable you won't be in the right frame of mind to make a decision.
  • Test in sleeping position.
Be sure to take a mattress for a "test drive" by lying down in the place and position you would normally sleep in.
  • Take your time while testing.
If ten seconds of lying on your side does not give you the information you need to make a decision, then stay longer. There's no time limit on testing a mattress, and you want to be sure it's the best one for you before you buy.
  • Expect a transition.
Don't be alarmed if you get your new mattress home and it feels a little funny at first. There will be a period of transition, since your new mattress cannot be exactly the same as the one you slept on or so long.
  • Allow 30 days to adjust.
Give your mattress a break-in period of at least thirty days. Remember that a new mattress and box spring are an investment in your health, well-being, and your future, and that the ultimate benefits will likely be well worth this adjustment period.
