After a long day, retreat into a sultan's sumptuous lair. It can be designed without spending a lot of money or jetting off to Egypt. Here we offer some suggestions on transforming your bedroom into a Bedouin oasis.
Arabian Nights in a Sultan's Sultry Bedroom
In contrast to the sparse desert outside, a sultans lair revels in exuberant color and comfort. Key items in creating an oasis inside, according to Los Angeles-based designer and home staging specialist Rosemary Wardell, include sheer, gauzy fabrics in any shade as well as decorative pillows and mosaic tiles. Incense and brass accent pieces complete the transformation.
Thick rugs in intricate patterns become magic carpets for tired feet. Place several around the room, especially beside the bed and in open areas. Adorn the bed with seductive pillows the richer the color, the better.
Canopy the bed with sheer, gauzy fabrics like tulle, silk, or rayon. Or create a cozy reading corner by draping fabric above stacks of large leather or woven Berber sitting pillows.
Mosaic tiles bedeck everything from mirrors to tables to decorative boxes. For a more powerful statement, create a wall hanging from mosaic tiles in strong colors against a sky blue wall.
Cover tables with tasseled shawls and top with bowls of rose petals. Accent pieces in brass, like Moroccan lamps, candlesticks, and trays along with walnut or rosewood boxes inlaid with mother-of-pearl reflect the saturated colors of the room by candlelight and carry you from the daily grind into lavish Arabian nights.
