Moms-to-be need to take it easy, especially when they travel. Here's a list of medical tips to keep both mom and baby happy and healthy.

  1. Consult your OB-GYN before making any travel plans, and keep his or her number handy while traveling. Ask your doctor to refer you to a doctor in the area you'll be visiting, in case of an emergency.
  2. Travel in the second trimester of pregnancy (18 to 24 weeks) if possible, because of the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester and possible complications, such as premature labor, in the third.
  3. Don't travel at all in the third trimester if you have high-risk pregnancy conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or multiple fetuses.
  4. Avoid visiting "exotic" locations such as the Caribbean or Mexico, because of the risk of infectious disease.
  5. Don't neglect your diet. Eat right, avoid alcohol and exotic or raw foods and stay hydrated, taking plenty of bathroom breaks.
  6. Move around frequently to avoid developing blood clots. If traveling by car, make regular stops. If flying, get up and walk around at least every two hours.
