But where's the best place for a babymoon?

It all depends on just how relaxed you want to be. For Grossman and Hong, a cruise was perfect.

For Christina and Michael Montoya of Albuquerque, N.M., a visit to the Sheraton Desert Oasis resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., was just right. The couple visited in May 2005, when Christina was six months pregnant with Elena, now almost a year old.

"We usually go to Phoenix to visit my brother, but this time we planned a few extra nights to stay at the resort," said Christina Montoya. "We spent most of the time by the pool, where it was cool and comfortable. I had to stay out of the hot tub, but I did get a special pregnancy massage."

Generally, pregnant couples should pass up strenuous vacations in favor of beach vacations, resort visits or low-key city trips, said Eisenberg.

"I would suggest beaches for couples who don't normally go for beaches," he said, explaining that a laid-back pace that usually seems boring might be just the right speed for a pregnant couple.

Resorts are also great—the more luxurious, the better, he said.

But Eisenberg's third recommendation—major cities—may seem surprising at first. "Major cities are a good choice if you're looking for a change of pace," he said. "There are cities that are wonderfully walkable."

The key to visiting a big city while pregnant is not to take on too much, said Eisenberg. Lovely walks, good meals and short visits to accessible urban attractions such as museums can make for wonderful, grown-up memories to dwell on later, when you're changing diapers at 3 a.m., he said.

"I feel like there are ways to be in a major city without being caught up in the craziness. Cities can be relaxing, and, don't forget, there is often excellent food in hotels."
