Design Tips From Vern Yip Design Star judge Vern Yip gives expert advice on the designers' work, plus great ideas for your home.
Design Star Challenge 1: Design a Vegas Penthouse The first challenge the 11 designers faced was to turn an empty Las Vegas penthouse into their own living space. They had 28 work hours over three days and a budget of $15,000 to complete the project. Here are Vern Yip's tips for some things the teams did right and wrong and how you can apply them to your space. Get tips now >>
Design Star Challenge 2: Dueling Kitchens For the second Design Star challenge, the designers had to remodel a kitchen. They were separated into two teams, each having 28 work hours and a budget of $10,000 to complete the project. Kitchens are widely considered the most difficult room to renovate, especially within the context of budget and time. Unfortunately, kitchens also happen to be one of the rooms that homeowners use most often, which increases the importance of designing and executing smartly and with skill. As one of the judges, here are my tips for some things the teams did right and wrong and how you can apply them to your space. Get tips now >>
Design Star Challenge 3: .99 Reasons to Be Creative Week threes challenge is my favorite so far because it is a true test of each contestants individual ability to think outside the box. With limited time and only the basic furnishings in the room, each designer must showcase their design ability with just two paint colors and their dollar store purchases as their tools. While some contestants rise to the occasion and create visual masterpieces, others fail to step it up, risking their longevity in the competition. Unlike last years resource challenge, everyone showed ability, raising the stakes and underscoring that this years winner will have to demonstrate their best skills each and every week.
