Vern Yip's Design Tips: Design Star Challenge 2: Dueling Kitchens
Hold the Faux. The dining area and the new fountain/wine storage area are less of a success from a design standpoint. Along with the faux-painted, exposed brick on the backsplash, the proliferation of fake stone lions and the faux-antique furnishings fail to capture the essence of Tuscany. The Tuscan look is about warm, worn and approachable furniture and accessories that exude life. This dining furniture manages to be warm, but is over-scaled, formal and manufactured-looking. The bar stools, made of bamboo, do not work with the Tuscan look at all. The fake stone fountain and use of fake plants appear dated and don't add any vibrancy or life to the space. What might have worked better? A large-scale bowl filled with red and green peppers or some simple painted pottery that tied in with the green backsplash. A little editing would have served this team well.
