Vern Yip's Design Tips: Design Star Challenge 6: Deserving Designs
What's Your Angle? Kim does a wonderful job of explaining her work, but the main issue of space planning still plagues her very good attempt at providing a livable and kid-friendly space for this family. The division of the living room into two separate and unrelated seating areas diminishes the overall effectiveness and functionality of the space. With a completely open room to work with, a more effective solution would involve positioning the sofa and the chair in a way that would allow for both conversation and TV viewing. The skewed placement of the patterned throw rug on top of the carpet does nothing to relate to the seating because of its direction and size. Rugs are a wonderful way to designate spaces, even if you have wall-to-wall carpet. But, they need to be substantial enough and lay in the same direction as your primary seating to serve as an area definer. With all that, Kim makes a dramatic change and definitely helps a family in need.
