Vern Yip's Design Tips:
Design Star Challenge 6: Deserving Designs

Make Sense, Not Walls. Todd's main challenge is to accommodate a large family that enjoys hanging out together for both conversation and watching TV. Additionally, he has to accommodate young kids and their toys. The room is substantial and Todd chooses to go with large-scale furniture pieces in the form of a mammoth sectional and two very big upholstered lounges. The sectional is a viable alternative due to the large number of people that use the room. Its placement, however, with its main spine running down the length of the room, divides the narrow space in half. This creates a wall that turns a substantial portion of the seating away from the TV. The two large loungers that jut toward the sectional create a narrow passage that appears awkward when viewing the room in its entirety. Behind the sectional, a large and rather empty area has been reserved for the kids. A painted plywood storage bench looks hard and uncomfortable, but the hammock and chalkboard are a sign of Todd's sense of fun.
